Mandrake 9.2 on a Thinkpad770

This is my first run-in with a Linux OS (I go back to dos 1.0 and I've dealt with unix before so I'm not a complete newb). The questions:
1) How do I get Mandrake 9.2 to recognize the dimple mouse on the laptop? Is there a driver/config I can dl/run?
2) The battery for the laptop committed sepuku a couple days ago and if the laptop is left unplugged for more than say 12 hours (I haven't done real scientific testing on it) it just won't boot. I wasn't aware the MBR needed power to sustain itself! I still won't allow myself to believe that. What exactly would cause that?

I've never heard of an MBR being stored anywhere other than the hard drive.

Yeah that's kinda what I figured...on the bright side drake just all of the sudden started recognizing the pad mouse out of the blue ...never look a gift horse in the mouth right?
