explorer.exe hogs all resourses

I have recently noticed that when I open a drive and look for a file that everything loads slow. I contol alt del and for some reason explorer.exe is at 100 percent. I have a fast system with a gig of ram and 2 internal drives at 120 and 200 split into 2 partitions of 100 and 1 external 120. I am up to date with virus defs and according to Norton I am not infected. Also no spyware. This is a fairly recent problem and is driving me nuts as I spent alot of money to build a speedy machine and my 2 gigahertz laptop seems alot faster. The slowdown is only when explorer is open. Any ideas, Thanks.

Update your antivirus and scan your system.

WORM_APLORE.A installs explorer.exe in your windows/system folder and calls it up by registry. There are other trojans, worms that also "appear" to run explorer.exe but actually are running other programs, or infect or replace the original explorer.exe file.

Housecall, mentioned above, is great, and is sponsored by TrendMicro, the PCCillin company. For a paid program, PCCillin is my recommendation; for free, I suggest AVG free anti-virus to be found at www.grisoft.com. Norton is not as agressive against worms as some other companies, in my experience.
