Errr...Anything Wrong With Mandrake 9.1 ?

Noticed that 'Mandrake Soft was out of 9.2 packs, but was selling the 9.1 packs at half price.

Wouldn't this be a good deal for someone willing to pay for set of CD's and a 220p. Manual--as well as help a Co. in financial limbo, or so I heard ?

The major diference I see is that 9.2 supports the new 64-bit CPU's. But at $500 plus a pop, don't think too many are going to bite --yet.

9.1 was a good version. $500 for 9.2? ? ?

You can get Mandrake 9.2 Power Pack for $59.88 or Mandrake 9.2 Discovery for $34.88 over at Amazon.com and it's in stock.

You can always compile an x86-64 kernel if you need the support... before you run out and spend $60 on a gaudy, unproductive distribution like Mandrake (or Red Hat, SuSE, et al.), I recommend downloading a distribution like Debian or Slackware and using that money on a book that will actually teach you how to use Linux.

Or if you get tired of downloading, reading, compiling, tweaking and customizing your "real man's" distribution of Linux you could give a gaudy-beautiful, user friendly, up-and-running-in-30-minutes distro like Mandrake or SuSE a try and have everything just work out of the box ....and use your spare time to take your girl on a date or unplug your kids and take them to the beach.

I still have Drake 9.1 on a couple boxes -it works fine. My 10-year old loves it, her favorite game is Nethack....

www.linux.org -great site, free online Linux courses

The nuts and bolts of Linux is like millitary PT (physical training), some people love sweating, most just do enough to get by.

Yo, Xeroid, I was talking about the 64-bit CPU's suported by 9.2, not Drake 9.2 Errr..youse got any 64-bit processors , yet ?

Yeah, CMonster I figure that Drake is a good mid-point fer da Newbie DOOG to start, and not da sissy stuff like Lindows.

I'l agree that Manuals often suck and are incomprehensible. There is a big diff betwween knowing a subject and being able to teach it. But, hey its nice to have something (like 220p in writing--incase you want to look up some feature quick.

Actually tough to get a book that suits you any wahere. Best to look at books in stores yourselves --some people want a theorectical understanding with broadly applicable principles, other want a cook book. Good if you are starving 'causeof Blizzard in NYC !

I looked at the Amazon site, but all they seem to be selling is some apps--and the right to download (?) the OS. it reads: Platform--No OS. Wha ?

Ok, I bookmarked the Tutorial page. I have about five FOLDERS on Linux, so I probably already have it -so I take two Tutorials. Serves me right for Excessive Bookmarking

I tink I made a boo-boo about 64-bit CPU's...saw reference to 64 Gb RAM . Does ANY body need 9.2 to run 64-bit CPU's they sold the family jewels for ?

DOOOOOG

P.S. Anybody know who this guy is ?

But, if he got 9.1 retail at a reduced price wouldn't he still get a free update to 9.2 and get full tech support for free as well? BTW, the tutorial that CMonster linked above is an excellent starting point for any n00b.

Ahhh, I didn't know that was a feature that you required. To answer your question, no I don't have a 64-bit processor . . . yet.

Hey, Xeroid, if I could afford one of those 64 bit "features", I could afford overnight Total Install Service by "Linux --Delivers !"

Must be visiting one of those well-waddled Penguins I see at the finest sea-food Restaurants.
