USB 2 card blow out pci slots or just coincidence?

Hey Folks,

Apologies for the long post

I got myself a new Freecom USB 2 pci card and a new case at the same time Antec Sonata. I tried the usb card in the old case and it all worked fine.

I then spent hours installing the system in the new case and when i started up it started working intermittantly. I tried the second card that i had ordered for my brothers machine and got the same results. I tried moving the cards around and found that it was only recognised in 2 of the 5 pci slots. However even when it was recognised it wouldnt work properly. The usb scanner would be recognised but not scan. My new freecom usb2 external hdd which is the reason i got the card for will be recognised and i can see its contents but cant write to it. I have since tried the cards in another machine and they give the same problems. The HDD works fine in a USB 1.1 port.

Now i cant get any pci card to work in 3 of the pci slots. Only 2 are now working. I have taken the mobo out of the new case and set it up but the same situation exsists.

My question is did the USB2 card blow it out? A sort circuit in the new case? but wouldnt that have caused more damage? I did get one warning about more power not being enough when i plugged in the HDD on one occasion. However the HDD appears to be working fine. Or is it just a victim of a dodgy power

I just find it odd that i now have 2 dead USB 2 cards 3 dead PCI slots, Slots 1, 4 and 5 counting from the agp port on my ECS K7S5. Everything else seems to work fine.

Any ideas before i rma the 2 cards and the mobo.

With your USB 2 cards removed, you may be able to clear things up by getting into Safe Mode, Device Manager, System Devices and remove your PCI Bus.

When you reboot, the system will re-detect everything you have in the PCI slots.

Have all your software handy as you may need it for some of your installed PCI devices.

Cheers!

That is a weird one. I'd go to the manufacturer of the cards. Send them your full spec's and a detailed description of what went down. I would like to hear the outcome of all this.

Cheers!
