Cyrix or Celeron?

Hey all, I'm trying to do a few upgrades to an older computer that I have. I've got a computer that has a Slot 1 PII 300mhz in it now w/ 256mb ram. I decided to upgrade the memory in it last month and now I plan to upgrade the CPU. My question is, is the Via Cyrix 600mhz or the Celeron 733mhz better? I just bought a Cyrix 600mhz on eBay just to have it and I have had a spare Celeron setting around. I thought...hey, why not just by a converter and upgrade that computer.

The reason I ask is because I know Celerons suck...and yet another fine example here...Why NOT to buy a Celeron.

The Via has 128k L1 cache, 64k L2 cache, and is on a 100mhz FSB. The Celeron has 64k L1 cahce, 128k L2 cache, and is on a 66mhz FSB.

Thanks for the help.

You are HEAVILY confusing your Celeron's. The old P3-based Celeron was a much better chip (relative to the P3) than the P4 Celeron is. A 600 MHz Celeron will destroy a 733 MHz C3--the C3 is a piece of junk barely capable of powering a modern toaster.

hey now, you're underestimating the power of even semi-modern toasters...

lmao! Well, I guess I can just resell the Cyrix. Now that I know a little bit more about them...I don't think I want one. Thanks for the replies.

You have to keep in mind, everything is relative. Even the current Celly 2.2, while destroyed by a modern P4 or AthlonXP (to say nothing of A64) would run circles around an old Pentium 3 500. Cellies are cheap, and they have their place--but if AMD's an option, Celeron generally shoudln't be.

The price between AMD XP chips and Celerons should mean that Celerons are never considered.

I always laugh (on the inside) when seeing a cheap celeron machine sold to a customer, who is also buying a couple of games...

There isn't much (if any) of a price gap between the AthlonXP and the Celly, unless this is what you meant....

But yeah--its pretty damn sad just how hard those Celeron's get slaughtered.

I have first hand experience with both CPUs. I put together a C3 733 MHz a while back and man that thing was slower than my 400 MHz celeron. Then, when the mobo died, I found out that the cpu was soldered...thats right..f'in soldered into the mobo. Go with the crappy celerons over the c3 ANY day!

I've also seen Durons soldered to motherboards, so that's not a Cyrix only "feature". Last Cyrix I had was a P200+ running at 150 MHz (I think).
