WTH is Steam doing?

I just got done downloading the latest patch or Counter-Strike on steam on my 56k modem, took 4 hours.

Now, whenever I am playing Steam is downloading some crap in the background and I get 1500+ping.
Does anyone know what this is?
I also noticed the icon in the task bar changes to a logo with little dots on it instead of just the big arm thing.

Its the speed rating of long it takes your request for data to be recieved at server and data sent form server recieved by you (the round trip if you will). Just like ethernet does. My 100mbps lan party switch gives 5 pc's a 10 ping rate. LOL. Lower is better. Hate to see what my 56k dialup hardware modem gets. Its a USR external with a 92mhz detecated modem chip and 256kb ram. Hehe. Fasest dialup but $100 when I got it years ago and still not "that" great.

Xtreeme, I know what the ping is, the question was asking what was downloaing in the background. With it downloading, I get the high ping, and cannot play.

its the server is requesting info from ur computer and ur comp is answering back.... tham thing happened to me,... go on the internet, open steam, then let it sit for a while,.. it will eventually finish

I have troble my self using DSL but the latest patch made so I couldnt play I had an cd key of my friends and if its assigned to one user another cant use it with the latest update. So no more DOD for me.

I hate steam
valve decided it was a good idea to create a system to download tiny updates that somehow bottle neck any connection. the only thing good about steam is that you can have a larger menu screen so you can see the servers whole name.

Most apps like that do a background task checking to see if your up to date-and etc. Like someone else said let it sit a minute and see if it stops-then try once. Sorry-wasnt implying anything-didnt understand your question is all. Good luck.
