Kids AMD 2000 or Intel Celeron 1.7GHz?

In about in an hour, I plan to buy a new processor. I can't afford anything too extravagent...maybe between $100-130 for both processor and fan.

After doing a little research, I have narrowed it down to either the AMD 2000 or the Intel Celeron 1.7 GHz. Some friends tell me that AMD is the best on the market and they wouldn't even consider anything else, while others tell me that, for the money, Intel Celeron is a pretty decent chip.

So, I have once again decided to consult techimo.com, as the advice received from the people who frequent it hasn't failed me yet!

I am currently running:

Intel Celeron 800MHz w/ 128 KB
384 MB RAM
GeForce 4 MX 440 video card
40 GB HD
Windows XP

Any suggestions?

Dave

For $113, you can get a Athlon XP 2700+.
But if your choice is between those two, get the AMD. No contest.
Unless all you do is web surf and instant message, than stay away from Celerons.

Between an Athlon and a Celeron? That's not even a contest. AMD hands down.

This is true as well though, especially if your other option is a Pentium 4. But AMD has really had killer prices on good processors, and even the well-priced Celeron just can't compete.

For instance, right now you can get an Athlon XP Barton 2500+ for $91. Jump to the Pentium line, and for a buck more you get... a Pentium 3 1.0. Hmm... I wonder which is better?

But if you are running a Celeron then you will need a new mobo for the Athlon.

That cel 800 sound like a socket 370 cpu. Either for xp2000 or cel 1.7 (p4?) he'll need a new mobo.

get the 2500+ retail ($91) and the abit NF7 ($81) = $172 only $40 more than you were wanting to pay for the processor.
