quad threading?

Someone told me that intel has come out with a new technology called "quad threading". Basically, it is just like hyperthreading but instead of simulating 2 cpu's, it simulates 4. I tried looking on intel's site but didnt see anything related to it. Have I been misinformed?

Yes. Hyper-Threading simulates a second CPU, but only does so in an attempt to make un-used execution units useful and improve CPU efficiency. Moreoever, it doesn't always work, and when it works, it almost never yields an increase in performance equal to that of a second CPU. Even Intel says that your best-case performance boost from HT technology is typically 25%, and the more normal boost is probably about 10-15%.

And keep in mind, HT can actually slow a chip down.

So now, quad-threading is a pipe-dream. It wouldn't even be useful.

quad pumped is basically what some people use when referring to Intel's Quad-Data-Rate FSB technology. Basically, it's kind of like Double-Data-Rate (DDR), except instead of two transfers per clock, QDR can execute 4 transfers per clock. That's why P4 boards have an advertised QDR FSB of 400, 533, and 800MHz (100, 133, and 200 REAL MHz respectively).

and FSB of 400 is 200 . Why would they use a 100 fsb on a p4?

I thought that when the P4s first came out, they were running on a 100MHz bus that was QuadPumped so they advertised a 400MHz bus. Same situation with the 533 and 800, as beppodmime indicated.

Now, i believe that i had heard at one time, that intel was messing with putting 2 cores in one die that have HT technology thus being equal in theory to 4 processors? Any one else recall anything? I will try to look for a link.

The earlier P4s ran on a 100mHz FSB "quad-pumped"... hence my wife's P4 1.6gHz at default runs 16.0 x 100... but we actually run it at 133mHz (16.0 x 133 = 2.134mHz)... or the equivalent of 533mHz fsb "Quad Pumped" using an Asus P4S533 mobo.
