Learn from my mistakes-Raptor drives

If any of you folks are planning to get a Raptor drive or have one, I can't stress enough how important cooling is for them. If you are using 2 in a RAID configuration, separate them as far apart as you can. Heat sinks and fans are almost a must. Please plan your cooling along with you Raptors. I killed three of them. Bad lesson to learn. It took 3-4 days to kill one running 24/7. Most of you folks are probably thinking, DUH! The rest of us dummies need help whenever it can be had. Hope I save some of you the problems I had. My case is big and has lots of fans. That is not enough. The Raptors require special treatment to live. They get real hot.

BS! They're certainly worth getting...I've installed 2 systems using the Raptors and they run just fine with no special cooling or ice cube trays installed. However, I do not have them in a RAID configuration...but the systems are kept running 24/7. The A/C is on 24/7 as well...

Remember the difference going from a 5400 RPM drive to a 7200 RPM drive was like? Well there you go. Thats all I can say about upgrading to a Raptor. I like it.

I run my HDD with RAID in it.. Each Hard drive has its own Bay cooler and a cooler mounted underneath. I cant see why Hard drives dont get specialy attentioin like a CPU... after the CPU I Consider my Hard drives the next most important thing. Without em all of my work goes bye bye... But of course... I learned to respect them the hard way as well

Wow that's some serious overheating. I've got 2 RAID1 config with 4 7200RPM HD's in one system and it gets very hot. I can't touch the side of the hard drive for more than 5 secs or it will burn me. Plus it's loaded with 3 CD drives and another 7200RPM drive. It doesn't have any special cooling... only 2 case fans and is on all the time.

Expect death soon. HDDs have a maximum case surface temperature of 50 to 55 degrees Celsius. The hotter they get, the sooner they die. Data retention is also affected, since magnetism doesn't like heat at all.

Just to update my original post. I reworked my cooling so I have airflow directly on the hard drives, hard drives are separated, one at the top in a 5 inch drive bay and one in the usual location and added 2 80 mm blowholes. Its been running 24/7 for almost three weeks and no problems. Lesson learned.
