Win 98 / XP Network with Problems
Hi all,
I have a network at home with an XP Pro and 98SE computer. The 98SE system can't access files on the XP system, but that's just fine. The problem, the 98SE system can't connect to internet. It's on the network, I can ping it, I can see all it's files he hard drive from the XP system, but it can't get out to the internet.
I'm using a D-Link broadband router and it used to work just fine. The 98SE system had a nervous breakdown and needed an operation where I had to restore it from a backup. Everything seems fine except I can't get it to connect to teh internet.
So it's on the network but can't get to the internet. Help! And yes, it was connected before the 9 year old son induced meltdown.

Compare/confirm these key IP settings first:
IP address (should be almost the same, but not the same... probably only the last octect should be different)
Subnet mask (should be the same)
Default Gateway (should be the same)
DNS server address (should be the same)
If these are correct, next step is to try pinging an Internet IP address, then Internet Host name.

Okay, I can ping the web. Used the XP system to seek out 5 IP addresses from the web, went to the 98SE system and could ping all five no problem. Problem is somewhere in 98SE, it just has to be!

So you can ping Internet addresses which is the first test. It means your IP address is correct and so is the default Gateway. But what about pinging by host name? If that fails, then your problem is with the DNS. Maybe as simple as an incorrect DNS IP server setting in your TCP/IP config. If it passes, then your browser may be the issue. Could be as simple as a Proxy server is set to be used when one should not be.

Hi and thanks for the help so far everyone.
This is just extra frustrating as the Win98 computer was connected to the internet before it hiccupped.
Winipcfg showed the following results:
Host Name: computer name.network domain
DNS Server: the domain IP for my internet provider
Node Type: Broadcast
NetBIOS Scope: nothing
IP Routing: Nothing
WINS Proxy: Noting
NetBIOS Resolution uses DNS: nothing
Adapter Address: 00-03-blah-blah-blah
IP Address: 192.168.0.***
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.*
DHCP: 192.168.0.*
WINS: nothing
Secondary WINS: nothing
I can ping IP addresses on the internet but not an internet domain name. Attempts to ping any address comes back as host unknown.
The network has the MS Network client installed, the dialup adapter and a TCP/IP protocol for it, the NIC and the TCP/IP protocol for it and file sharing for MS networks.
Okay, that's it for now.

Problem is with the DNS then. Maybe as simple as an incorrect DNS IP server setting in your TCP/IP config. Compare that setting on the working and non-working machines, it should be identical. After that, you may try running ipconfig /flushdns. Additionally, goto settings-->tcp/ip -->properties-->advanced.
and delete any manually added suffix.

You also might try un-installing TCP/IP, re-boot, re-install TCP/IP, and re-boot.
Something may have corrupted a file.
