Building My First PC

Hi,
I need your help. I m using a HP Pavilion computer. I want to build a new pc under $500.
Now I am using :P4 - 1.5ghz,768mb ram,Nvidia Tnt2 M64 video card ( 32mb ram ),2 IDE100 hard drives,Asus mother board.
I wan to build :
Amd 2800+ $132
Thermal Right SLK-947U with fan $57
Asus A7N8X Deluxe nForce2 - $110
Kingston KVR400X64C25/512 ---------$92
512MB DDR400 PC3200
Asus 52x CD-Rom $20
Sony 52x24x52 CD-R/CD-RW IDE $41
Pc Case - Stryker Windowed ATX Mid-Tower Computer Case with 350W

Total : $515

Can I use my old IDE100 (40 pin) hard drive with Asus A7N8X Deluxe mobo? I will buy a new video card next year. I want to know, is this pc will perform better than my P4 hp pavilion in video editing and other stuff? Please give me some advice.Thanks.

If your primary goal is vid editing, I would make getting rid of that vid card a priority.

The hard drive will work with the new mobo.

Use a 40 pin 80 wire cable for that HD to get full performance.

With the prices the way they are right now I'd switch out the CD-ROM drive for a DVD-ROM drive.

I have to agree with bill they essential cost about the same and with more and more software coming out on DVD format(not to mention movies) you'll be much happier with a DVD drive.

Thanks for helping me out. I will buy a dvd -Rom drive. I want to know , how Amd 2800+ performs in video editing? Is it faster than P4 -1.5? How hard is to build a pc? this is first time. Please give me some advice. Thanks again.

unless you plan on overclocking your chip, you don't really need to buy a heatsink, just use the stock one.
I agree with the DVD-rom idea, they are just that cheap
and if your going to be doing a lot of visual intensive stuff, i think 1 gig of ram would be better. Check out ScottW's thread about Ram. http://www.techimo.com/forum/announcement.php?forumid=3 there are some very good prices.


On the actual building aspect, it is very easy. The only thing you will have to worry about is the thermal paste on the processor. besides from that, the "hard" or annoying part is setting up the software.

if it's an AMD processor, I believe the heatsink comes with a film on it covering the thermal paste. otherwise their re sites that show oyu how to apply it. I don't know any off the top of my head but you can easily google one, or search the forums for links.
