I have a P4 3.06ghz 533fsb cpu. I'm using the box-stock heatsink,
fan combo. With a room temp of 68-72 F. The CPU runs at 40-50C.
I've been told that this is within tolarance for this CPU. What heatsink-fan would bring the temp down to a more reasonable temp? A Zalman ulta quiet????

an ultra quiet will not give you the best heating. it is made to be just that, ultra quiet, at the expensive of extra cooling.
maybe check out one of thermalright's slk heatsinks (preferebly one that takes 92mm for the best amount of airflow). i've got the slk947u on my 2600+ which is oced to 2200mhz and my temp is 30C

zalmans are very nice hsf's but can be quite expensive! Get the huge one with the 92 mm fan and copper, the thing cools like a charm and is very quiet! also, the silent cool (i think thats what its called) by thermaltake is supposed to be almost as good... havent tried that one yet... you could also try and bundle your wires and create better airflow throughout your case

I think your CPU temp is just normal within 40 - 50C. Better HSF can make the CPU run at 40C even lower. There are many brands out there that serves the same purpose at a lower cost. good luck.
