Outdoors Internet Exploder Nightmare..HELP!

After several attempts to upgrade my wife's puter from IE5 to IE6, I am really getting tired of seeing this message .
" A previous installation has pending work requiring a reboot. You need to restart your computer to complete that installation, before running IE setup. Setup will now close...."
She's running a 450mhz cpu with a Shuttle Hot 591P mb. with 196mhz ram....Can anyone PLEASE HELP ME figure out this mess?......thanks

Have you rebooted? Have you installed/removed anything lately?

Dood we have been trying for like a year to upgrade with always the same error message, and yes, we have rebooted a ga-zillion times. I've pratically tried everything short of fdisk-ing....SIGH

Microsoft's solution is to rename the "wininti.ini" file. Have you tried that?

"wininiti.ini.bak" or "wininiti.bak"

You just wanna get rid of the fact that it's called "wininiti.ini".

You could rename "evilrick.ini"

Since you already have one in the oven and one cooling down on top, I really think I should bow out on this one.

Don't blame me for anything that happens if you try this.

Normally a problem with I.E. can be solved quite simply with a repair job. I take it your wifes machine is Win98 since you are going to I.E. 6.

Add/Remove Programs and double click on the Microsoft Internet Explorer and Tools in the list of installed programs.

Click the radio button for "Repair".

You we be told that you'll have to reboot after the repair job.

When you finish rebooting try the installation from the beginning be re-downloading the files for I.E. 6.

Good Luck

I took a while to post my thoughts and Rick's idea sounds better than mine. Save me till the last straw.

Cheers!
