XP Pro and print server setup question.......

I'm not big on networking so here's a question a buddy of mine just asked me hoping I could help........(I told him I'd ask the "specialists") ..........even though we know the smart specialists are all going to Linux anyway.......har har.... he he.......

snip>>>>>>>My boss got a new computer and had me install it on our little network. The network runs a print server, I need to install the printer to the new computer.
The problem is the install disk for the printer is nowhere to be found in the office, (I think it is at the boss's house, as good as lost) Is there a way I can install the printer without the disk? (Windows XP Pro.)<<<<<<<<end snip

I'm guessing that if he runs a typical "add printer" wizard, then XP Pro's gonna find & install the printer??? But maybe I'm not understanding his question correctly?

if xp does not find the printer you can always go to the company that makes the printers website and d/l the latest drivers.

Map a drive to one of the networked systems with the printer already installed and the same OS, then use the printer install wizard, and when prompted for the driver location, point it to the drivers on the mapped drive you created. Bingo!

Thanks guys!! Actually, he just e-mailed me saying that his problem was that the computer wouldn't find the printer on the network. It found everything else, but not the printer. Soooo.........he physically picked up the printer & installed it via usb and now everything works fine! ho-hum, I guess! he he Thanks again!

Actually it's easy to install on a print server so everyone can share without having to leave the attached computer on...
When connecting you need to "create a new port". Don't connect to LPT1. The new port should be the port and IP of the printserver. These options are in the Add-a-Printer-Wzard. Also XP and W2K have many of the cuurent required drivers already and it is rare that you need additional, however "Scotlandtb" gave you the correct solution in case you do.
