Kids Where to install DVD RW?

Hey guys!

My new Pioneer DVD RW is waiting for me on my porch right now, yay!!!

Question is, which opitcal drive should I replace? Right now I have a 52x CD-ROM and a 40X CD Burner, each on their own IDE channel...the DVD burner does have CD burning capabilities, but only at 24x I believe. I think it reads a CD at 40x.

So whaddya think? Replace the CD-ROM or CD burner?

Thanks!

Mike

I would replace the CD-ROM. Even though it is a 52x, i think that a 40x read speed is enough for anything. Plus, you can continue to use the CD-Burner to burn CDs and use the DVD Burner to just burn DVDs.

That would be my suggestion.

I say replace the cd-rom... also, are you planing to back up dvds?

I'm just wondering... it's ideal to have a dvd reader of 16x for faster ripping.

That's what I was thinking, but I wanted to get other opinions...I seriously don't think any of the CD's end up reading at 52x anyway, that's just the "potential" maximum speed. Glad I have a RAID board so I can keep the two burners as masters on their own IDE channels.

Thanks for your quick response!

I've been told by several TechIMOers to backup DVD's to image first, then burn from there...I'll be using DVD X COPY Xpress/Platinum to do most of my burning. Plus Alcohol 120%, Nero 6, etc.

I thought about purchasing a DVD-ROM for that reason, but most people voted against it...

Replace the CDROM, the difference between reading a CDROM at 52x or 40x would be much less noticeable than the difference in burning speeds.

I say replace the CDROM

Well, there isn't "on the fly" burnning for dvds... so any program you use will save an image to the HD first then burn to a dvd.

The reason I mentioned it was because it takes around 15-20 min to rip a movie using a 16x dvd rom. the burn itself, using 4x is about 15-20 more minutes...

now that's 30-40mins right there using 16x reader... if your burner came with 12x dvd read, the process will be around 20min longer my guess...

Ahhh...good point! I could designate the DVD-ROM as the source and the DVD burner as the destination (of course)...good thinking, that's why I posted here! Sometimes the obvious is so easily overlooked...
