Digital Camera on RH9

Hi All,

I have a Canon Ixus 400 Digital camera that I am trying to use with Red Hat 9 but it dosen't seem to have the drivers for this on it, it only goes up to the IXUS 330.

I waqs wondering if anyone has any drivers for the 400 or any advice of where I can get them from or if there is a work-round that will get the camera working.

Thanks in advance

Barry..

just out of interest do the drivers work?

reason I ask is that I have a canon ixy 320 (japan model) hooked up to my gentoo and with gphoto2, libgphoto2 and gtkam I don't get to choose my exact model - I get IXUS v3 on autodetect and it works fine

actually I notice that IXUS 400 is in my list of cameras too - perhaps try compiling the 3 items above from source (???)

I don't know what additional features the newer IXUS/IXY has, but from my own experience (parents have a 200-series) the numbering is more to do with the pixels rather than additional functionality - digicam buffs feel free to tar and feather me now

if you're dead set on using the model-specific drivers, try either the rh update (if it still works) or google for the packages listed above - here's a starter for 10

hope you get it working

Hi,

Thanks for the advice, I have downloaded a copy of Gphoto version 2.1.3 and it is a tar.gz file.

I am a bit new to all of this and any help would be great.

I have un zipped the file and un-tared the file and i now have 162 odd files, what do I need to do next?

Step by step instructions would be great.

Thanks again

Barry

OK, I have found out that i need to type ./configure then Make, then Make Install to get the program installed, but I keep getting an error when I type ./configure, it seems to run through a number of checks the says the following

Checking for libgphoto2 >= 2.1.1... Requested 'libgphoto2 >= 2.1.1' but version of libgphoto2 is 2.1.0

Configure: error: Library requirements (libgphoto2 >=2.1.1) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them..

Any idea what might have caused this and how i can get rount it?

Thanks

Barry..

that error is a dependency error. You will need to download the libgphoto version that it is searching for and install it first. rpmfind.net will have it.

link to rpmgphoto rpm files

Hi,

I have just downloaded and installed Version 2.1.2 of libgphoto2, I have re-started the machine and tried the ./configure command again for gphoto2 but I am getting the same error.

I have installed the software in the following paths.

/software/camera/gphoto2-2.1.3
/software/camera/libgphoto2-2.1.2

Do these need to be in the same directory for the ./configure to work? If so can I just move the libgphoto2-2.1.2 directory or will I have to uninstall the software?

Can I just point the ./configure command to look for the libgphoto2-2.1.2 directory?

actually...from the error message you listed, you should download and install version 2.1.1 of libgphoto2

Hi,

I have now got gphoto2 installed and working with my Canon IXUS 400.

I have just had to copy the libgphoto2.pc file from /usr/local/lib/pkgconfig directory to /usr/lib/pkgconfig directory and now the ./configure works for gphoto2.

Thanks for all of your help.

cool -glad to hear it

I was just doing research on your problem and returned to find you had already solved it. I was going to test the SuSE 9 gphoto rpms on RH9 later today because SuSE 9 comes with gphoto 2.1.2 -thought maybe I could have emailed those to you if they worked.

also was going to recommend you first uninstall your previous version of gphoto or libgphoto first, but I like your solution better.

cool stuff glad you got it working

unfortunately I wasn't around when you ran into problems but I'm in Japan so I tend not to be around when everyone else is

the upside is that you've conquered this for yourself which is far more rewarding in the long run

how do you like it so far? I usually use the Gimp to work with the snaps once they're on the hard-drive
