"Delayed Write Failed" Error Message When You Manage Files in Windows XP

"Delayed Write Failed" Error Message When You Manage Files in Windows XP

I am looking for someone (MICROSOFT?) to correct this issue.

Here is the information that I have available to demonstrate that this problem
mainly appears to be related to Windows XP and Large Hard Drives.

There is so much different affected hardware (on XP) that it is difficult to find a real
lowest common denominator. So far I have not found anyone claiming to have this issue
on Windows 2000. I'm not saying that someone doesn't have the issue, I just have not found
a link on the Web saying so. That does show that at least XP is one common denominator.
There appear to be more people with a ATI cards complaining of this issue then there are with
other video cards. That would tend to indicate that ATI video cards "may" be at least partially
another common denominator. Maxtor and Western Digital hard drives appear to be mentioned more
then any others but I would guess that this issue effects all new large EIDE/ATA drives that
require 48Bit addressing to use.

I am unable to find the KB on Maxtor's site but I've included the URLs from Western Digital
that at least acknowledge the issue.

So far though it appears that NO ONE (Promise, Western Digital, Maxtor, Microsoft, etc) has done much
about it. The KB articles suggest a few things, but most of the suggestions are futile for
everyone. So far I have not found anything that CONCLUSIVELY fixes the problem for EVERYONE involved.

I have not modified the Program memory settings in the Advanced tab, they are as set by the XP installation.
On my system I get event viwer errors and system freezes.
Disk Management says the WD1200 is Healthy (but at risk)
There are physical clunking sounds at random times from the Hard Drive/s
When system was running Windows 2000 and only WD1200 and WD800 there was no such
issue with Delayed Write Failed
If I unplug the new WD250 and plug in my old WD800 with Windows 2000 and use the built-in IDE ports
on the Motherboard there are no Delay Write issues and the occassional clunking sound goes away too.
Once I plug the new WD2500 back into the Promise Ultra100 TX2 the issue comes back.

I've had trouble with PROMISE controllers....in W2k
WD drives are very picky about correct jumpering too.
Try moving the 120 to your reg. IDE.

Delayed Write Errors

Hi,

I just recently installed a (Maxtor) Promise Ultra 100 PCI controller so I could add a DVD burner to my system.

Yesterday, I started getting these delayed Write Errors...Data Lost...etc....

It laid waste to my XP installation. I ended up having to reinstall XP (pro) Fully. It wouldn't even let me do a reinstall-in-place. Suffice it to say I was ANGRY as heck.

So here I am trying to follow up where this mystery error has come from.

From this thread it looks like there is some type of bug in the way XP handles data coming off the PCI bus when using these PRomise controllers.

Why it shows up whenit does and from whence it comes from is not entirely clear to me at this point.

I am going to pull this promise card out and move my DVD burner in place of my regular DVD rom for now.

I just can't have this happen time and time again....

What should you do once you encounter the error?

Hi,

thx NTDoc for the great summary. So I realised that I wasn't using the IDE connector that was provided with my HD (although the one I was using MAY habe also been a 80 connectors - 40 pins one..?? How can I tell??).

I just changed the IDE connectors. Should I reformat my HD and start copying from scratch to see if I encounter the problem again?

FYI:
WD 160 Gigs with 8megs cache
Win XP

Thx.

Both the 40-wire (ATA-33) and the 80-wire (ATA-66 thru 133) use 40-pin connectors. The 80-wire cables have a blue-colored connector on the end that plugs into the controller. The 40-wire cables have more coarse looking wires and no color-coded connector.

"Delayed Write Failed" Error Message When You Manage Files in Windows XP"

Been here, done this, had Dell replace my one month old WD 80gig drive.

Then a friend stumbled upon an article at ATI's web site where it talked about ATI and large amount of RAM. I crashed hard twice right after I adjust a system preformance setting...
