DVD Burner on this System?

My friend wants to know if I can install a DVD burner on his system, which is of the following specs;

- Pentium III 600Mhz
- 128MB SDRAM
- 7200RPM 20GB HDD
- Windows 98 SE

Will a DVD burner work on this system? It'll more than likely be a slower one, because he doesn't want to pay too much. He said he wants to use it for data backup, and whatever else the kids with the DVD burners do...

Also... Am I mistaken in thinking that CD-R/CD-RW can be burned on a DVD burner? Because this would be the only optical drive in the system, as their is only one slot for an internal optical media drive.

And last but not least, what would be better for him? DVD-RW or DVD+RW? What's the main diff. between the two?

Any info would be helpful.. and awesome, too.

Thanks in advance...

DVD Burner should work, but I have no experience or examples to back it up.
The only problem would be if the hard drive and motherboard could supply the DVD with the info fast enough, which I believe it should.

Most DVD burners are also CD burners. Check on the one you get to make sure.

- or +?
The dual formats can be had for so cheap now, that's a real option. I think I saw a deal for a Lite-on one for under $100 the other day. If not, - is generally playable by more DVD players(for TV) + is a bit newer, a little faster. Course this varies a lot, and there's been lots written about it on the internet.

good luck,

This link will explain the -R/RW, +R/RW formats in detail!

These are the system requirements for my burner, but I'm sure they're not all exactly the same:

500Mhz CPU or faster
128MB Ram
18GB hard disk
24 bit graphics adapter (1024 x 768)

O/S Support: Windows 98, Me, 2000, XP

It will work, but it will be sluggish as you mentioned...

more ram would be usefull... you will probably need some more hard drive space if you work with any video... and you wont be able to touch it when its burning....
