Partition Magic 8 Advice?

Hello ladies!

I just picked up a copy of Partition Magic 8 and was wanting to create a new partition solely for the purpose of burning DVD's with my new burner that will hopefully arrive tomorrow!

Any advice/tips/warnings that you want to give me before I have at it? I don't like reading instructions/help files...
Is there a certain way to go about it?

Thanks!

Mike

Hey Martoch,
do you have partitions now? If yes then if you change the c drive you will have to reboot and pmagic will start in pc-dos to do it's thing. If you are partitioning another partition, then it will do it without restarting. You can always do like I did. I run a seperate h-drive strictly for caching.

Thanks, Rick!

That's exactly what I want to do...set up another partition just for caching...I need to partition off some space of an existing 60GB drive that has about 18GB or so of free space left.

You say "it will do it without restarting"...is it easy to figure out? All I've done so far is launched the program and stared at my partitions.

Well do you really need that extra partition? You should be able to pull off burning a DVD on an existing partition with enough free space, over 4.7gb preferably.
However you might be onto something. My tip would be you can have a maximum of 4 primary partitions, and an extended drive with 16 on a logical partions. If you can resize and create one on your logical partitions.

However confusing partition magic can be, trial and error may not be the best way to learn how the app works. It still isn't too difficult to use tho.

Also to correct the drive letter schemes, you can go into Windows disk managment and change the letter schemes so that the drive letter will appear after the previous drive drive's letter in alphabetical order. May as well do it since windows will do this next time you reinstall.

Well of course I don't need the extra partition...my 60GB drive is 1 of 3 drives I have installed and is NOT the primary...it only contains backup files. I could just create a folder called "DVD CACHE" or whatever and use that, but I was wanting to partition off some space just for the DVD burner. I'm sure I can figure it out, but it's always nice to have "heads up" info before I begin.

It is that easy. * is the easiest so far. If in doubt, post your partition specs and what you want to do and we will help.

even I have a few on my machine.

on 1st 120 gig:

c: operating system
D: operating system
e: applications
f: Data
g: games.

on 2nd 120:
h: movies & programs

on 40 gig:
I: CACHING ONLY

Rick

I'm still considering picking up another hard drive, probably a 120Gig'r. However, it IS the Christmas season and I have a 6 yr old to buy for...plus I just bought myself the burner. So partition seems more logical (excuse the pun) at this time.

Thanks Rick, I'll check it out tonight...I'm not even sure how many dang partitions I already have spread across my 3 drives.

I think you missed what I meant,
Notice the Partition legend at the png image.
On one drive you may have a total of 4 primary partitions, Creating an extended partition will give you 16 logical partitions to use.
It's just something to be aware of when creating your partitions

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah...I smell what you're cookin'.

I'm not sure how many primary part's I already have, but it wouldn't be an idea to create a few extended partitions. Can I change primary to extended using PM8?

I dont have the program handy, but I think you might be able to do so. If not just resize and create one.
If it's possible you could temporarily copy files to one drive, and delete the partition and create the two new ones.

Also I forgot to mention, an extended partition counts for one primary partition.
