How to run Real VNC

I am having trouble trying to run the Real VNC program. This is how I tried to setup a connection between my computer and my dads computer.
I dialled into the internet and then ran VNC server to get my ip address (BTW How do you get your Ip address in XP?) Then I started VNC viewer in listen mode, phoned my dad on my cell phone and told him my IP address. He dialled in to the internet, started VNC server clicked on Add new client, typed my Ip address in the Host name text box and clicked okay. But then nothing else happened.
I tried to ping my dads computer but couldn't. Anyone have any ideas?

are you running any kind of firewall hardware or software?

Yes I am running EZ firewall which is similar to Zone Alarm pro. I figured that I would get a message to warn me about access to my computer that I could just override.

The problem is I couldnt ping my dads computer and he doesn't have a firewall.
