just installed xp pro!

hello all, i know most of you don't care for ms but i like their os's, i'm not gutsy enough to just go straight over to linux and quit ms cold-turkey. i just did a fresh install of xp pro, i've had win2k since it came out so this is a very colorful os compared to what i'm used to! i just got a newcomputer with the following spec's:

-biostar m7ncd mobo
-amd xp2600+ barton (2.08ghz)
-Nvidia geforce4 mx440 64mb 8x agp (not that great but i can't afford the card i want right now so it'll do)
-256mb pc3200 ram (now this is where i need to improve to @least 512mb)
-mitsumi (i think that's how it's spelled) 54x32x54 cd-burner
-and dual 80gig hdd's

now, when i'm on the internet and scroll with my mouse wheel it delays slightly, is this due to my lack of ram? i have the color at 16bit and resolution at 1024x768 (i normally have it at 1280x1024 and 32bit) because i thought that would help but it did a little. is that something normal with xp? another thing, i had 2 hdd's like i said and i had win2k on the primary one and the other drive just had backups of my programs and other files, i was trying to put xp over my win2k and instead it installed it on my other data hdd. it doesn't hurt anything nor does it bother me, i was just wandering why it did that? it didn't say anything about a c or d drive to install the os, i guess it just assumed that i want it there. well, that was the easiest dual os system that i ever set-up!

thanx in advance,

<shad>

do u have microsoft certified drivers for ur Nvidia videocard? the sluggish scrolling might be a result of that. microsoft does encourage having certified drivers for XP users...i suggest do a windows update, get the latest certified drivers and see if that makes any difference...

the delay is not due to lack of ram - look for something else, ram is sufficient

actually the ram is not really sufficient for xp. i had 512mb in my old system and xp was using alot of it up. xp may have chosen the data hard drive if it were the master or something

I think nishark is on the right track.

Go install the latest 'ForceWare' drivers for your video card.

Ordinarily, lack of RAM would cause the issue you describe. HOwver, 256K should be enough. (I just pulled all but 128K to test it. My mouse wheel is slow too.) 256K is sufficient.

However, are there any other processes going on that might use resources?

that's all the programs that are running when i surf the net, it's annoying really. my friend has xp home and his is worse, whenever you type it delays a couple of seconds; mine isn't doing that, yet, so i will try and update my drivers.

thanx for the help!

Ahhhhhh yessss.....XP......the answer to all of MS's problems, right? WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Good o/s, but not much better than the rest. I'm about ready to test a Linux dummy myself (stand alone just to play with). Once/if I master Linux, I'll be happy to stop using MS!

too bad we need sights like......tweakxp.com!

Enjoy. In a few ways, XP is better than 2k (Games is pretty much the only one I can think of, I guess it has a few extra wizards but I really don't like them) and I hear it can be quite stable if you install the SPs and updates. Its just there's SO many of them lol.

I don't use MS anymore, but that doesn't mean I have to bitch about them at every opportunity. (more like I choose to )
Ah well, We're sure to see a lot more of you around here now you have XP.
