does having a blue light or a red one make any difference?

I've got the MX500 and use it for gaming. It comes with software excelleration that comes in really handy in fps gaming...you can turn completely around in a 360 degree circle with a very short hand motion...quick kills up close in multiplayer games I highly recommend it.

I tried the MX700. Working with graphics I found it very jittery. Very hard to pixelate in straight lines.

I tried it on different surface patterns with no joy. I returned it and I'm still using my Logitech balled, cordless wheel mouse. Nice, smooth operation. It'll be nice when they can make an opticle that compares.

MX700 was great for surfing the web. The back button almost sold me on keeping it for my second machine.

I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on performance with gaming.

Cheers!

The MX500 and 700 are EXACTLY the same in build. The only differences are:

A) 700 is wireless
B) 700 is heavier (battery weight)
C) 500 doesent loose power suddenly
D) 500 is cheaper.

The both use the 800 dpi optical laser on them. There are no differences. They both have the same buttons, same layout, same design, and same shape.

For gaming, I would reccoment the 500. Its cheaper, lighter, tracks fast, and is gread for normal desktop use (the ergonomics feel nice in your hand)

However, just to show a comparision, Microsoft mouses tend to be a little less high quality (but its not noticible when you use it), but cheaper mices. Most of the MS mice dont have 5 programmable buttons like the MX5-700s do, and some people argue that the ergonomic MS mice dont feel nice in your hand. But their still good mouses for cheaper.

Beemer: The optical mouse shouldnt be jittery for selecting pixles. Ball mouses track FASTER, but not more PERCISE. Opticals are more percise, and with the speed of the MX series, that shouldnt be happening :\.

If you're really into gaming, you might want one of the hybird ball-optical mouses that track at 1800dpi (yea yea, thats insane). But if you're into heavy gaming, its really worth it. Check them out here:

Great mouse if you have that type of desire and/or money.

I can draw 30 pixels in a diagonal line with my ball mouse using a single click and hold and pull. When I try the same with the MX700, it was to jittery. The pixels jumped from the line I was trying to track to the next line up or down. It failed the test. Sure. I can use the line tool but the mouse should be able to do it as well.

When opticles first came out I tried a friends. Did the diagonal line test and my comments were much the same.

Opticle mice are a great idea. Just not for all applications.

Believe me. I wanted to keep the MX700. The look and the feel was great.

Cheers!

let me tell you this.. if you take my intellimouse wireless.. you better be giving me a logitech cordless with the base charger.. otherwise you will get hurt.. but fo rgaming I still prefer the good ol corded mice.. for some reason I just do better gaming with the cords..

and the back/foraward buttons.. those shoulda been on a mouse 6 months after the first browser... at least IMO...

yeoch that's one costly mouse.. most expensive mouse i ever bought was only $20.. an M$ wheel mouse. for some reason the design does not look like it'll be too comfortable..

the Wheel Mouse Optical has a 800-dpi sensor on it too so now im really wondering what might make the MX Optical Engine such an advantage..

also considering a MX 310/300 since i dont know if i'll like that many buttons on the mouse.
