Networking HUB to HUB?

I have a friend that is trying to network his computer and his cable internet. His set up is like this:

One computer, hooked to the HUB -with cable internet also hooked to the same hub.

Three other computers, hooked to the first hub through a second hub that is connected to the first hub.

He is able to get internet on the first computer being it is hooked to the same hub, but the other 3 computers on the other hub do not get internet, nor can they see the first computer over the network. Is the problem with the hub to hub connection? I suggested trying a router, and he now has a Hub-Router connection. Is this possible either, or does it have to be 2 routers?

Thanks

He only needs one router, assuming the router has a couple ports. Most consumer routers have at least four. But as long as the ROUTER is connected to his cable modem, everything should work fine. You can put a hub under a router in the hierachy, but make sure the line from the router to the hub is either a crossover cable, or connected to the UPLINK port of the hub.
