Gaming Gigabyte - IDE problems

I haven't built a system in a while, and I need some basic help.

Gigabyte GA-8IK1100 ver 2.0 with HT
P2.6G 800mhz
512K Corsair 400mhz Ram
Asylum 128mb 8X AGP
Maxtor 120G 7200rpm 133/ATA
Seagate 80G 7200prm 133/ATA
DVD+-R+-RW
liteon cd/rw

Okay, turned it on, everything seemed to work okay, then went to BIOS, set it up and rebooted.

I cannot get it to recognize any of the IDE drives. All on Cable select. The seagate will be my Master and is connected correctly.
all drives are connected correctly. The segate was from my previous computer and is set up, but for the OS on it. I have tried taking my old master (XP system set up on it) and connecting it just to get the thing up and running but it won't even recognize that a drive is on the cable.

It does, however, recognize the A drive.

The BIOS won't find the drives, even if manually entered.

It must be somthing basic I need to do. Doesn't the BIOS have to recognize the connection before I run fdisk, etc.?

thanks for any help.

Steven

Does your BIOS offer 'Hard Disk Auto Detection' ?

Besides making sure you have 80-wire IDE cables, I'd say set them up as M/S instead of using CS. Set the Seagate as Master and the Maxtor as Slave. Make sure you have the power connected to them.

Yes it does offer auto detection, and it does not detect the drives. The cable is brand new and came with the motherboard. Power is connected.

I will try the m/s settings later this evening.

thanks

Okay

I can't update the bios because the updates require win32, and manually setting the m/s did nothing.

anyone got any other ideas? any help is appreciated.

You have to extract the files to a floppy to get the actual BIOS files.

Regardless, have you tried different cables or just tried one drive at a time?

Im gonna ask the obvious, are the cables oriented properly, stripe side of the cable on pin1 for the hd, and mb?

Did you check the mb ide slots for bent pins, and the drives for the same?

ER

I did the BIOS updates, but need to do the last one over or roll it back to FC from FD because I got a checksum error. I will do that tonight. The latest BIOS did seem to check the IDE, but because of the checksum error, it might be as simple as that. I will check that tonight.

DAF & ER

I have checked all the cables, pins, orientation, etc. I have used different cables. I have tried one drive at a time.
