Rambus Memory

I have an HP Pavilion 7960 that only takes Rambus memory. This is the specifications from HP:

--------------------------------------
RAM (standard): 128 MB PC600 Rambus (RDRAM)

Maximum: 2 GB (4 x 512 MB RIMM) (MS Windows Me supports up to 512 MB)

Speed: 400 MHz synchronous

Rambus channels: 2

Sockets: 4 / 184-pin RIMMs

Size: 128, 144, 256, 512 MB RIMMs

Pairs Required: Yes. Rambus RIMM modules must be installed in pairs, and both modules within a channel must be identical (same manufacturer and type).

If there is an unpopulated RIMM socket (in a channel), it must be loaded with a C-RIMM (continuity module) to complete the Rambus channel. For example, populate each channel with:

RIMM + RIMM or RIMM + C-RIMM

Free RIMM sockets: 2

Type Supported: Intel PC600 RDRAM 400 MHz
------------------------------------------------------------------------

Does this mean that I can only install PC600 memory, or would I be able to go with higher?

From what I see on their site PC600 is it.

You can go up to 2 GB of memory.

That mobo has the Intel 850 chipset, that chipset should support PC800 RDRAM.

OK, sounds great. But what does PC600 or 800 really mean?

How "fast" it will run.

Here's the Rambus RDRAM Overview.

PC800 RDRAM memory (running at 400MHz*2), PC600 (256MHz*2) and PC700 (356MHz*2)

Intel's 850 chipset can use PC800, as can that system. I'd HIGHLY recommend you use it. PC600 will badly slow that system down, as RDRAM's already considerable latency is only jacked up further by running the memory bus asynchronously with the FSB.

If you're thinking about buying more RAMBUS modules you're in for a rude $$awakening$$.

It's not that bad. I am looking on Ebay. Now if I buy it at a retail store, then I will spend some money. This is the first computer I have like this, and I will not buy another one.

Thanks for the info guys!!!
