Should this processor work with this mb?

Hi all,

Should my Athlon 1400 work with my MSI KT7 pro2? It looks like it should, but when I try to boot first it says it is only 1000 then a second later the power shuts off . I am using a 300W power supply that should be plenty right (giving only a HD is also in)?

I am trying to troubleshoot my problem in an earier post by determining if the processor is the problem to a weird freeze problem.

Any thoughts would be great as my parents are becoming impatient .

Thanks,

Jutah

I doubt if this is going to help but .......

Support for Socket-A Athlon/Duron processors (600MHz ~ 1.2 GHz and higher)

Higher may not include the 1400.

The BIOS allows you many options and values that you can adjust. If you are not confident with your ability, rather than customizing settings, you can choose to use fail-safe defaults, or optimized performance settings. It is completely Plug & Play compatible, and offers ACPI. Gone are the days of moving jumpers on your board before installing your processor. It includes complete jumperless FSB and Multiplier adjustments. In the advanced settings, you can specify any FSB adjustment from 100 ~ 166. Unfortunately, due to the limitations of the KT133 chipset, you probably will not be successful running any FSB higher than 112 MHz. You can also adjust your Multiplier in steps of 0.5. The latest bios versions allow a multiplier setting of 5.0 ~ 12.5 You can also change your I/O voltage from 3.3 Volts to 3.4 Volts. There are also adjustments for the Core voltage. From the default of 1.75V, you can use voltages ranging from 1.5V ~ 1.85V. It is recommended that all users use all default settings; the only time that you should adjust any of these settings is if you are attempting to overclock your processor. The BIOS also reports voltage, fan RPM, and CPU temperature measurements. A great feature of the K7T Pro 2-A, is the option to run your SDRAM at 133 MHz, even though your FSB is only running 100 MHz. This gives faster and better memory performance, which will increase the overall performance of your system.

Can you even get to the BIOS? Maybe set it to defaults.

the athlon 1400 came in two types...one with 200fsb and one with 266 fsb...do you know which yours might be?

Cuz that board is only gonna do 200 fsb (100x2..so it shows 100fsb actually))

If you get a processor that will boot, you can then flash to the latest bios...which may possibly help you use that 1400.

I would try to just clear (reset) the cmos and hopefull it will boot then using the 1400, just at a lower speed...then maybe try to get the latest bios...then hopefully you may get the 1400 to speed.

But if it just continues to crash after 30 secs..you probably need to buy or borrow another cpu to check it out with...to see if its the cpu or board or maybe even psu.

OR..crashing after 30secs COULD be heat related...are you sure the heatsink is on good and has some grease between it and the cpu?

The only other processor I have is the one that is freezing up(900 Athlon) That one will boot but then between ~10 and 30 seconds the screen freezes. I just need to see if the 1400 freezes also that way I can tell if it is a bad board or processor.

Thanks,

Jutah

hmmm, maybe the bios is set on 1000mhz so that is why the 900 is freezing...reset the cmos and try the 900 again.

The 900 was freezing b4 I put in the 1400. That was the orignal problem (see weird freeze problem post). I will try to clear the CMOS. Let me get this stright, all I have to do is move the jumper back and forth right with the power plugged in right?

Thanks,

Jutah

Either that or remove the battery for about 60 seconds or so.
