i know that the asus motherboard a7n8x deluxe has a dual lan system - in which another pc can hook onto the second lan and form a small network.

if i have a motherboard without dual lan - but has integrated nic, can i add a pci lan card and use it as a dual lan system??

You would still need a crosspatched cable. You don't need to add anything to the second computer.

What asus is trying to say with their dual lan, is that they have integrated 2 regular nics to the mobo.

You can add many network cards to a system if you have the resources. I've had 8 NICs in a computer before. You will not automatically have increased LAN speeds. It depends on your environment and software.
Many dual NIC systems have software that allows you do something like Connection Teaming which can increase your LAN speeds.

well if you dont care about internet and want strictly one pc to another, i believe (and could easily be wrong) that you need only use a crossover cable between the two pc's existing NICs. if you want internet, then you would need another NIC running to the internet

i could be wrong though

butch81385 is correct except you may not need a 3rd NIC for Internet access. It just depends on your Internet connection method.

butch is right. My first network had a ethernet card in each computer connected by a crossover cable and a modum in one for dial up, with MS internet sharing.

You can also connect to cable or DSL through a USB port
