ok.

Actually I fixed the issue.

What is the deal with XP now as far as default file sharing goes?

I threw a fresh xp home build on my workgroup....couldnt access it and couldnt figure out why.

Finally I went to actually SHARE something, lol, and it said "remote access has been disabled for security blah blah"..it suggested running the wizard...but it also just lets you enable file sharing.


Whats the lowdown here? Is this just for a little tighter security?

What the best way then to share files securely over a workgroup? Obviously file sharing has to be enabled, lol

go to tools, folder options, view and do you have easy file sharing enabled?

well its rebooting right now....but I did black vipers "safe" config as I always do..which puts services like "auto conenction manager" on "manual"...I had turned those back on, and enabled the gues account trying to get access from the W98se machine...

Ok, I turned OFF the guess account, turned back to manual all of the auto connection manager stuff etc and I am still able to access the shared folder from the 98 machine.


So when it gives that popup asking if I want to enable file sharing...what is it actually enabling....is it the setting you mentioned? So I could just do it there as opposed to having the popup prompt me etc?

not only do I not have it..I dont even SEE IT, lol.

Are you thinking of xp pro?

i guess pro only has it, my bad

yeah, pro has that feature, but not Home..I guess they figured home was "simple" enough, lol.
