IP config question?
I've noticed that 2 out of the 3 pc's I have networked through my 2wire router and netgear hub, will not re-aquire the modem IP when hooked straight to the modem. Both of the two problem children run XP Pro.I tried the fix connection in the drop down in the my network connection icon.
Also tried the >>ipconfig/release
then >> ipconfig/renew
in the command line.
It looks as though the pc grabs the ip but will not display a web page.
I can reboot also, still nothing.even reboot the modem?
I hook the router back up and all is well again.
AND YA! I had the right cat5 cable lol
What do ya think?

Not sure how your ISP works, but here the IP you get from the ISP is tagged for a certain MAC address. If you switch network devices (different router, different NIC, etc), you have to register the new MAC address first.

The way my ISP (adelphia) works, you can swap routers or, in your case, swap router for a pc and it will work...but not all ISP's are that way..some of them may require, as Msix said, you to call in and get them to register or enter the mac address etc.
Or, it might just take 10-15 minutes for the change to get into the ISP's system?

Well, if your machines are grabbing the IP from your modem, but aren't displaying any webpages, I'd assume there was some sort of problem with DNS. Perhaps they aquired your IP, but not the DNS information.
If you want to rule that out as a problem, just connect your PC up like you mentioned where it's connected straight to your modem, and after you verify that it's grabbed the IP address, try connecting to a site using the site's IP address instead of their domain name.

hummmm?
You may be on to something with the DNS thing?
But ah I should mention I work for the Cable Co.
The PC shold go on line easily after changing from router IP to Modem IP.
MY THIRD Machine dose?
it's running XP HOME
