ftp server

I set up my computer to be an ftp server but can't access it from anywhere. I tried pinging my public IP today and couldn't even do that. I have cable internet with a router....what could my problem be?

what ftp program are you using? did you forward the right ports?

to make sure you have the right public ip address

I have the correcet IP......should any of that other stuff matter? If I can't ping it then I can't do anything else right?

if you go through a router, the router just may not be set to respond to pings. be sure port forwarding is set correctly in the router, and that your ISP doesnt block that port.

yah some routers have the option to not respond to pings.

what router are you using?

my router is an efficient networks speedstream 2601. If it just doesn't respond to pings that means it may be working just fine so what else could my problem be? What exactly should I ask my isp?

After you've tried to logon to your server from outside, you should check the logs of your router to see if there was an attempted connection. And if there was, why it was dropped.
From there you can configure the router to port forward, or accept connections, or whatever.

my router has no log that I can see......maybe the problem is I need a new router? If it is my isp, is there any way around it?

Try removing your router, and connecting your computer directly to the cable modem. See if it 'works' that way.

(Note, you may have to 'reset' your cable modem to recognize your computer's ethernet card [MAC address])
