Kids Need Redhat 9 info

I picked up RH9 on Linux user/developer mag the other day. Put it on a compaq laptop (armada e500) It went on just fine, found my wireless card and I am using it now. Questions are; will up2date work or has this svc been disabled because I havent subscribed to RH"N". Next is there a APT for this ver, if so where, I have been looking for a few days now. I have kernel 2.6 test11 compiled(took about a hour with this pIII 600meg box) but I am not sure on how to move it to where??? so I can make it the active kernel??? HELP (I have the pet) not shure on it either.
