Domain Questions Win2k Server

Howdy,

I am setting up a network to learn on. So far I have a Win2k server, a Win2k Pro client, and a Win98 client. This afternoon I will add an XP Pro client. The sever name is Texas, the domain is Dallas, the Win2k client is Lewisville, and the Win98 client is Garland.
I can connect, map drives, and use a networked printer from both clients. When, on the sever, I click My Network Places>Entire Network>Microsoft Windows Network it will show two objects: Dallas with Texas in it and Workgroup with Lewisville in it.
My question is, is Lewisville a member of the Dallas domain or just the workgroup? Is workgroup considered to be part of the Dallas domain?
If, on the Win2k client, I go to Network ID and try to join the domain it will not let me saying the path can't be found.
I've read and reread my book on Win2k Server but haven't found the answer to this question. Maybe I need a new book. Any suggestions for one?

Thnaks,
Gerry

The W2K client may not have the Domain's DNS server listed for it's primary DNS, therefore it can't find the Dallas domain. Check that first.

Thanks for you help.

DVNT1
On the server under TCP/IP properties I have:
Use the following IP address
IP address 192.168.0.1
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Use the following DNS server address
Prefered DNS server 127.0.0.1
Alternate DNS server is blank

On the client under TCP/IP properties I have:
Obtain an IP address automatically
Obtain DNS server address automatically
If I change to Use the following DNS server address and enter 127.0.0.1 I get an error saying addresses starting with 127 are reserved for loopback address.

This is how I have the network set up:
I have DSL and a 4 port hub. The DSL goes into the uplink on the hub and the server and the 3 clints are connected to the hub.
The IP address of the server is 192.168.0.1 with subnet mask 255.255.255.0. The prefered DNS server address is 127.0.0.1.
If I do an ipconfig on a client I get the IP address and subnet mask of my DSL service. Is this the problem? Do I need to install a 2nd nic in my clients and route them through a separate hub?
Is there another way to do this?

JP
Thanks that is sound advice. Although, after rebuilding 3 pc's in the last 36 hours, if you could see this room you would think it too late!

Thanks again,

Gerry

I am thinking that on the clients the "Use the following DNS server address" should be 192.168.0.1 (the IP of the server)

Thanks DVNT1 and JP.
I solved the problem the old fashioned way. I threw money at it.
I replaced my hub with a router. I configured the router and got all 4 of my machines onto the internet but still could not join the domain. Remembering DVNT1's advice I changed the DNS server setting but still no go. While looking at the settings in the DHCP console I noticed my server IP address was 192.168.0.4 instead of 192.168.0.1. I changed that setting and I was in business.

Thank you both for the pieces of the puzzle that helped me get this thing going.

Gerry
