Kids Proper system to burn DVDs

I just bought a Sony - + r/rw dvd burner. I have two systems I can put it in. One is a dual PIII600 mhz with 256mb ram and W2k.
The other is a PIII800 mhz with 256mb ram, but I can swap out the main drive and use W98SE, or W2k, or (cough) XP.

Any thoughts on which way to go? Any suggestions of upgrading hardware is out for now.

Thanks.

I would think it would be best to put it in the 800Mhz system and then while its burning just leave it alone... I know you said upgrades are out of the question right now but any extra RAM would help and its pretty darn cheap online right now. I use Pricewatch to find the cheapest prices and then check with Reseller Ratings.com to make sure I dont get burned.

Ram is not a problem. I probably could drop another 256mb in without any problem. It's the mobo / cpu etc. etc that is at issue.

THANKS

Also... when making your DVDs. Make an image first then burn it. If you do not make an image you will add more work to the CPU and will be more likely to get burn errors and make coasters.

As I only have the burner now, I'll have to copy to disk and then back to the burner. I also just bought, during the mad Thanksgiving sales, a 160gbWD with 8mb cache and 7200rpm. That should be a big enough drive.

Just curious, which Sony did you buy? I just posted a thread about buying a new DVD:

It was a DRU510A. Staples had a $30.00 rebate, plus my wife gets a $10.00 Staples Reward discount.

Still, when you copy to your HDD you will get VOBs if you use a ripper... dont know what the heck programs like DVDx create if you are copying movies. But if you just have the vobs and are going to burn those you need to use nero or something to make a .iso or .img first. then burn from the image. Will make from smoother sailing Has for me Martoch. I gotta see if I have the Maximum PC but they did a Head to head between the Pioneer and Sony Drives... really good review... Ill see if I can find it and scan it for you. Pioneer won by a little Was a faster burner overall.
