Recording to DVD from TV

I'm a newbie at this DVD burning and haven't got a DVD RW Drive, but is it possible to record from TV onto a disc with present CDRW's? Pete

it all depends on your software and capture device

I think what cysus was trying to ask in his inefficient way was what capture device do you have and what software are you using? If you want help you must answer these questions.

Are you asking if you can record a tvshow to dvd format with your cdrw drive?
If so, then the answer is no.

What I meant to say was: If i purchased a DVD RW can I burn shows etc from TV . I suppose I have to store it to a hard disc first before burning it, right?

Oh ok
Yeah, you would need to capture it from the tv in a good format, then encode it to mpeg2, and then author it.
It would be time consuming job, but yes you can do that.

However, most tv shows aren't that long, and the quality tv outputs (not good) it would be waste of time and money. I'd suggest you burn them as regular svcd's or vcd's. That you can do with your cdrw.

Or could he record to VHS and then transfer to disk with less processing and format swapping?

I was thinking of films not seen so often that occur from time to time and I have found a site that looks at the kind of software needed: http://www.dvd-burner.ca/WinDVR.html

Ok just did a test run... I used my ATI TV Wonder Pro to capture in from a VHS TAPE and convert to MPEG2 and Burn on the fly worked well but the program dosnt allow much on the side of menus and I assume if you select to make them it will require you to capture everything before burning which would no longer make it on the fly... you still have to buffer a lot of information to burn on the fly so you need a bit of hdd space open... i would est. 1~2GB to be safe as a minimum and I imagine you need a fast processor and I suggest 512MB RAM. From my experience my 1800+ Athlon can encode MPeg2 on the fly if I am not doing anything else... my 2.4Ghz can encode on the fly while im doing other things like listening to MP3s and surfing the net. Hope I helped
