Hard drive woes 2

I have the worst problems with hard drives. I've had more than my fair share fail. I've had about the same failure rates in different systems with different PSUs and mobos and in different houses. so, I guess that disproves that the wiring in my old house was a problem. And that my PSUs were a problem. And that OCing was my problem (haven't OCed in a while). Argh!

My problem is that I have 2 60GB Maxtors and I have RMA'd one of the drives twice and this drive that is failing the SMART test on boot right now has already been RMA'd once as well. I've had the same 20GB WD drives in both of my systems going on 3 years and both have been fine.

My history with Maxtor
More history

Oh well. I guess I'll RMA this one too and just wait for the inevitable 6 month RMA until I run out of warranty time and have to buy a new drive or two. In the Thanksgiving spirit, I'm thankful for my cheap Lite-On burner and 2 WD 20GB drives for backup.

Best regards,
Dave

yeah, i've been having the same problems too. I've had 3 maxtor drives go bad on me, and only 1 western digital drives go bad on me.
2/3 was SMART ERRORS
1/3 was hardware failure, clicking, clicking, clicking..
and the WD drive somehow got slower and slower... The drive took long time to boot windows 95 (at that time '97s) and when i put a new drive in, load time was much faster...

Maxtors suck! I have a 30GB Maxtor that is failing as we speak. Every few hours it acts like it's going into power-saving/shutdown mode and when it tries to wake up it just clicks and makes noise. Maxtors are the ONLY HD I've ever had fail on me. I've decided I'm never buying Maxtor again.

I've used Maxtors, Seagates, Samsungs and WDs for many years without a problem except once with a Quantum.

I'd say its just bad luck. Hard drive technology is pretty matured nowadays and failures are rare. In fact I sell a lot of Maxtors here and to my customers and haven't had a single failure, but then that;s not a large sample size.
