Gaming Computer won't startup

I've been reading previous posts to see if i could find the solution to my problem but nothing quite fits or works.

I'm trying to fix an HP pavillion xt983 Originally it's problem was that when you turned it on the fans would power up and the hard drive too but no post or activity such as screen turn on or hard drive activity. So i read a post of some one else having the same problem and it being narrowed to the motherboard. I ordered an mdi ms-6378 to replace the old factory original every thing seems like it is compadable with the 1.4 GHz athlon the the computer comes with. The only problem i ran into what with the front pannel switches. The original ones are a long bar with no cuts between the differnt connectors. It has 2 wires for power, 2 for hd, and 2 that it lables as dc/sw. Since i have no addapter i just pulled the gold contacts out of the plastic and hooked up the green and black wires for the power. as a precaution i put electric tap around them but i sliped up and didn't put anything between the 2 contacts in the middle. I tried fixing that but it still doesn't turn on. Any ideas on what is wrong?

I don't know if the processor or ram are 100% i don't have anything else to test them in. I looked the old board and there is a black burnt spot on it. Any help would be appriciated

I got it to work. I tried using a screw driver to jump across the contacts and sure enought it started right up. now I just need to figure out how to make the built in switch work....
