xp on old computer - no lan or usb support

hi,

just installed xp on an old friends computer to really be used as a file server... its got a 4gb primary drive and a 60gb slave.

its a p333 with 192mb of ram and I have tried a pci network card (generic - but drivers are realtek) and a pci usb hub (generic) and cannot get either to work....

I have no idea of the motherboard, it is pretty old and was originally put together by a small pc shop with 98 on it.

any help?

thanks,
koal

It may be an IRQ conflict between the cards, those USB cards are a pain in the rump sometimes.Try changing the card to a different slot.May take a few trys to get it in a working combination.

Right click on My Computer, select properties. Hit the Hardware tab on top, select device manager. There you should a couple ofitems that have Exclaimation points next to them. Those are your items with a conflict. If you double click on the ofending bits you might be able to change the IRQ settings right there and solve your problem. If that doesn't do it, do as BC said. Unfortunately this will be a lot of trial and error for you.

that system does not even come close to the minumium requirements for xp, it will not run even if you do manage to get it installed.

I was thinking the same thing, it will never run. The next old p.o.s. somebody brings me, I'll tell them get xp on it.

It's faster than 98?

Sorry, I don't mean to thread crap, but the thought of xp running on a 233 is pretty cool. Wonder why would they put such high min specs on it if it runs well on an old machine?

well i've got it up and running... windows xp home - it was an upgrade, so i formatted, installed 98, then upgraded straight away

works like a dream as a standalone pc, have a copy of office 97 (old - but a legal copy ) on it and they run pretty good. obviously not tried dvd or multimedia playback yet although the default xp tunes with some vizulalizations in Media Player work well surprisingly...

if only it could connect to the network or accept a new usb mouse or something
