wireless network w/o router?

I would assume it's already been posted but cant find it.

Is it possible to network tow laptops togeather just using their wierless cards or do you need a router?

i.e. one laptop is connected to the internet with a cable and the other one connects wirelesscard-wirelesscard and uses the first laptop's connections.

is it possible?

i would prefer the access point as you can lock your wireless network down better
