Win2K "error-Checking" vs ScanDisk

I'm having troubles with my HD freezing, I think it might be because of some bad sectors.

Win2K apparently got rid of ScanDisk and replaced it with "Error-Checking", does anyone know if there is a difference between the two and if I would gain from downloading a copy of scandisk and running it. Error-checking seems to take a lot less time than scandisk ever did, so just wondering if it's as thurough.

thanks

Are you sure Winnt has ever had scandisk installed?
I have Win2K on another partition..just installed it, and know little about the utilities that come with it...but I just looked thru the winnt, system and system32 folders and do not see anything of scandisk (scandskw.exe) or anything similar.

If scandisk is a part of 2K..its either named something else or in a different folder..and I will need to reboot into 2K to look.

You can always put a copy of scandskw.exe on a win98 boot disk and run it from DOS..probably better to do it that way anyhow...nothing loaded in the OS when running a util from DOS.

the disk checker in w2k is the old CHKDSK program modified to handle ntfs volumes. open a command prompt and type chkdsk /f

you will be prompted to reboot the machine.

Stick with chkdsk and its many many switches.

Well...gee whiz guys...maybe my eyes are worse than I thought. I just re-read the initial post, and to save my life.. I don't see one dang thing about NTFS being the type of format used.

You do know, Win2K will run just fine when using FAT32...dontcha?

and if you reread my post, i NEVER said or assumed he was using ntfs. it really doesn't matter either way, since the instructions i provided will execute the chkdsk utility.

all i said was that the chkdsk that comes w/w2k has it's roots in the old DOS/win9x chkdsk utility and was updated to work w/ntfs volumes.
