MPEG Movies Won't Navigate

I have a few MPEG movies on my computer that won't navigate at all. The movies play fine, but will not let me advance the slider at all. I have tried them in WMP and WinDVD. When I slide the slider it just jumps back to the place in the movie where it is. Is it possible to re encode these movies or is there something I can do to fix them? Thanks.

Aaron

when that happens with me its usually because windows doesn't have the right codec for the file. Does Mediaplayer try connecting to the web to search for the right codec when they start? Also some movies with errors I've gotten that. Just some ideas, I'm a bit lost to, but hopefully I've been some help.

I took the time to re-encode a few video files like that with Adobe primere and it seemed to fix it. I would imagine re-encoding it with any program would do the same.

I don't think any of them end with .asf. What would be a good program to reencode them?

I listed Premiere above but just about anything... TMPGenc should be able to handle it. Maybe windows Movie Maker..

Use TMPGenc to re-code the mpeg file. File > Mpeg Tools > Merge&Cut. Go to the Type drop down box and select MPEG-1 System Automatic. Click on add, browse to the desired file, hit open. You will now see that file listed in the box. Select browse and find location where you want to save the new file to. Hit run and it will re-encode it for you.

There are also other various ways to encode this file but it all depends on what you want to do with them.

I suggest you check out www.dvdrhelp.com and visit their forums for more help.

Also check out www.digital-digest.com and check out their forums also.

Just select it to MPEG-1 System Automatic

File loaded, just click on browse and save to location, then hit run.

When I load the movies in there they all have .mpg file extension and when I hit run it says they are not mpeg files. Any ideas?

TMPGenc can be picky about the movies it works with I just use another application when that happens. Anybody else know? Do you have any other tools you can use for now? Sometimes I let TMPGenc re-create the file using the merge cut tool and then I can use the new file when the original didnt work... they could also be DIVx movies as they also use the mpeg extention.

If they are divx movies what would I need to use to reencode them?
