Kids win xp remote desktop help

Hi All-

I am having a problem with Win XP Pro's Remote Desktop. I currently have 4 computers running though a router to the internet. I want to be able to access my 'main' computer from the others in the lan.
I have the main computer set up to accept remote connections, but when I try to activate remote desktop from one of the other computers it comes up with the Remote Desktop Connection window and asks for a computer. When I try to browse for a computer it shows my workgroup, but when I click on the workgroup to expend it to see the computers, it comes up with the error that the workgroup does not contain any computers with a terminal server.

Any ideas? All of the computers are running XP Pro.

Thanks, Fred

do you have any firewall software running?

when you go to access the computer you want to remote to why not just put the ip address instead of searching for the computer?

All of the computers are running Zone Alarm basic. I have it set up to allow the networked computers free access with each other. However I have tried shutting ZA off and then trying it and still get the same error.

I'll try the IP address and see what happens.

Wow, the IP works fine. Strange that it won't open the Workgroup just browsing though.

Thanks for the info GZ.

Also to resolve the name issue, try setting up trusted zones in zone alarm.

On the left in zone alarm click ono the firewall selector, then click on the zones tab (top right) and add the computers by name to your trusted zones.

Last but not least, it could be and probably is the built in XP firewall that is keeping you down.

Hope this resolves the name issue.

Thanks guys. I have already set up the trusted zones in za and in the xp firewall is off. Everything is in the same workgroup too. Probably just a microsoft thing with browsing the workgroup for remote desktop as i can browse it through network places fine. At least the ip address method works.
