Significant diff between Generic and Name brand ddr memory?

Should I get Generic Memory 512 DDR 2700 memory?
or
A name branded 256 DDR 2700 memory?

Is there a signifcant performance different between generic and name brand memory sticks?

for overclocking and stability named ram goes a long way. but for a machine that really isnt for high preformance or a back up machine gen ram works fine

Whole-hearted agreement here. And you can save a few bucks with generic memory.
You need to ask yourself whether or not you plan to do any overclocking in the future-if you are considering it, then you'd do well to get name-brand (crucial or mushkin would be my pick).

On note, you guys ever hear of K-Byte memory? I've never heard of it. I'm a bit skeptical on buying. But I think I should just buy Crucial memory.

Edit: What you guys think of Viking memory?

Ive used K-byte before with no problems...like was stated earlier... Most generic is fine for normal applications...and from what youve posted you are not looking for high end overclocking ram, but best bang for buck... I say go with the higher amount of K-byte than the lower amount of "Name-brand"

Well I have no intention of overclocking. But I want a high end performing system.

Currently my specs are:

1.53Ghz AMD Athlon XP
256MB PC2700 333MHZ (Samsung)
80Gig Maxtor HDD
Gigabyte 7VRX MoBo
Creative Audigy Gamer

I plan on upgrading my processor, mobo, and graphics card.
If you were me, would you get Generic, K-Byte, or a higher Brand name?

512MB DDR 2700 altogether ram should be enough for any and all apps and games right?

If you aren't going to do any overclocking, how about a nice middle ground? Kingston DDR is pretty decent RAM. newegg usually has good prices on it.

I think, and know because I use it, that for general purpose memory you just can't beat Crucial memory.IT will overclock and the price is great.

www.crucial.com

or this page for your mobo

http://www.crucial.com/store/listpar...7VRX&submit=Go

you might need to cut and paste that last one

I love bargain hunting at Fry's also. I tryed the Kbye Pc 3200, with rebate, couldn't get it to boot at the rated speed. Was unstable at 166 mhz (Pc 2700) speeds. Even at "optimal" timings.

Took it back, don't like messing with rebates anyway. My best middle of the road experience is Kingston Value Ram. Never had a prob, and it has a lifetime warranty.
