Problem with GeForce PCI installation
I am trying to help out a friend who is having a problem with installing his Geforce 4 MX 420.
I have uninstalled any previous Drivers, re-installed the new drivers, used VGA mode, and about anything else I can think of. When I try to boot up the PC using the new video card, the light on the monitor just goes on and off, and the monitor gets no picture. Windows will boot up, but no video. When i switch to the onboard video it pops up with video just fine.. I have also tried disabling the onboard video.. I have moved the card into the different PCI slots, and have it in the first one right now, none of them worked.
Anyone have any suggestions? Thanks..
-MaK

when you move card into pci slot, did you switch it in your bios to pci instead of vga..., try using it in another pc if applicable...where did he get it from, and is he sure it works?...

Well, Still no solution.. I have worked the problem down to being unable to disable the on-board video.. Everything I have tried has failed, and there is nothing in the BIOS to turn it off.. I am guessing maybe there as a jumper that can be changed but I don't know for sure and it says to consult the "Owners Manual" about disabling the on board video. I will have to see if my friend knows what he did with it..
I tried the video card in another PC and it works fine because disabling the on-board video was no problem with that PC, the Dell is just being "difficult"

simple - go into device manager in windows.
look for video.
disable onboard.
restart.
done.
same thing happened to my friend's dell with a geforce4mx420, but after diabling onboard directly in windows, we were able to run the 420. we installed the drivers first, then disabled.
if this doesnt work, then someone else chime in.

With a pci card, and onboard video, you have basically configured dual monitors. Everything will load on the primary monitor, currently the onboard.
You can make monitor 2, (pci card) your primary by right clicking the wallpaper to bring up Display Properties.
Click the settings tab, should see two monitors. Click on monitor two, then tick the "use this device as my primary monitor. click apply.
Then click monitor 1 (onboard) and Un check "Extend my Windows desktop onto this monitor.
Both video drivers are then enabled, you are just using the pci card, with one monitor.
Many threads regarding Dual Monitors on the forum. I have a pic of my Red Neck dual monitor (actually, three) setup posted a while back.
There are many ways to configure them: cloned: same on both monitors: Spanning, one desktop across two or more monitors, or Independant, Loading in the primary monitor, and drag and drop windows to other monitors.
Seems like you just want One monitor on your new video card, so you could disable the primary in the device manager, but be sure the secondary is enabled, with the proper drivers.
