need help setting up network

Hello
I have been trying to set up my 2 pc's up to a network. Well I did all the things that the windows network setup wizard said to do.
But I did run into a little problem. It states that some of the hardware is still disconnected. I am using a cat 5 patch cable to link up two nics. Should I be using a crossover cable instead?
New to this networking stuff. What I will be doing is allowing both pc's to share 1 dsl connection and to transfer files back and forth.
Thanks,
DLH

if you dont have a hub, switch or router between the two computers. you will need a cross over cable

network card-----cross over cable ----- network card

Ok thanks that what I was thinking. Is it worth investing in a router or switch. What are the advantages of using these instead.
Or is what I am using just internet and some file sharing good enough.

I have exactly the setup you are talking about & it works well. You don't need a hub or switch until you want to connect a 3rd computer. & yes you need a crossover cable.

Id get a router for sure....go from dsl modem to router..then to the pc's.

Much better setup than ICS in my opinion.....dont have to have both comps on, can add more comps easily without messing with others.

plus of course the biggest thing is that the router acts as a form of hardware firewall (nat firewall etc) and that gives you a better level of protection than going straight to the internet.

Plus routers are cheap nowadays and they all come with at least a 4 port switch so you have 4 connections there or you can come out to another switch or hub to as many comps as you like usually up to 253ish.

Plus, if ya get a router, the chicks dig it!

the advantage of a router is you have a firewall in the router for added protection . don't take that wrong . if they want in , getting past a router is just a little hurdle . but the difference in cost between the crossover cable and a router , i would just get a router . a cable can be anywhere for 5-25 $ depending on where you get it and how long you of a cable you need . i know i know you can get cables cheap but somtimes it is easier to go pay 8$ for a cable than seacrch for a cheap one .

a router can be had for free after rebate alot of time or about the same price of a cross over cable . like this one

so i would say get a router . the advantage outways cost .
