Weird Freeze problem

Hi all,

My parents called me over to look at a weird problem. When the system boots you hear a kind of hissing sound and then when the hissing stops the screen freezes. The hissing varies in time, but never lasts too long. About 1 minute max. I think it is either a problem with the mb or processor starting to go bad? It is also extremly dusty I tried to clean it the best I could, but no luck. It is not an os problem b\c I tried multiple HDs and IDE cables. The sysyem is an AMD 900 Athlon with a MSI MB running WIN ME (unfortunatly).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,

Jutah

I just tried to switch in a new processor and now I have a new problem. I tried to put in an AMD I think 1400. I just realized the max the MSI K7T Pro2 can handle is 1200. Now when I boot it gives me the one beep post, but then after to shows the name of the processor the power just shuts off? Any thoughts b4 my parents kill me ?

Thanks,

Jutah

I'm thinking power supply problem, on both of your problems. The fact that the more demanding cpu caused a shut-down points me in that direction. Good luck!

Where is the hiss coming from, speakers, inside the case . . . a snake jammed in the PSU?

Can't pinpoint exactly where the hssing is coming from it might be the Power supply, but as soon as the hissing stops the screen freezes. Do you think I should first try another power supply?

Thanks,

Jutah

If you have an extra one, sure. I wouldn't just go out and buy one though.

Can you see if any fans have stopped turning? Especially the PSU one.

I'd find out where the hissing is coming from before you do anything else. Unplug the speakers and see if its still coming. Next check the fans and HD's by just putting your ear next to them. Finding out what is making the noise will really help in diagnosing it.

Make sure you don't get your hair caught in 'em.

Thanks guys Ok the problem now is still the second one. As soon as I try to power up I get one beep, it recognizes the processor and then everything power offs. I then won't get anything for a few minutes, after switching the power supply switch back and forth a few times it will do the same thing again. It didn't do this until I switched the processor. When I put the original back it still behaved kike this?

Thanks,

Jutah

Systems

Hey again all,

I got a hold of another Power supply and put it in. That fixed the second problem(the one where the power just shuts off). The first problem still exists though The hissing is not from the power supply since it happens on both power supplys. So I think it is either the mb or processor. Any more thoughts? Btw it is not coming from the speakers it is definitly something inside.

Thanks,

Jutah
