ENABLING DMA IN SECONDARY SLAVE

I am trying to enable DMA in my Secondary IDE Master but it is stuck in PIO mode only.I have WinXP,Asus P4PE,60GB HDD (Maxtor 6Y060L0,256MB DDR RAM).ATI all in wonder Radeon 7500.

Primary Master/DEVICE 0:PIO4,UDMA5(both in gray in BIOS),Transfer ModeMA if available, current trasfer mode is ultra dma mode 5

Primary Slave/DEVICE 1:Auto Detection,DMA if available.Current transfer mode:not applicable

Secondary Master/DEVICE 0VD-ROM (SONY DDU1621) in PIO4,UDMA2.Transfer modeMA if available but note:current transfer mode is PIO mode!!!

Secondary Slave/DEVICE 1: CD-RW(SONY CRX22081),PIO4,UDMA2.Transfer modeMA if available,Current Transfer Mode is UDMA2.

As you will notice both Secondary master and slave have the same settings in BIOS (PIO4,UDMA2)but strangely enough only the CD-RW (Secondary Slave)have DMA enabled??Why is that so?Can i enable DMA for the DVD-ROM?
I tried my best to change Secondary IDE Device 0(Master)from PIO into DMA the way you suggested but it didn't work!!Plese help, thanks.

Are you using the 80 pin cable or 40?

Two things that usually fix this. First, make sure your chipset drivers are up-to-date. Second, delete the secondary controller in device manager, reboot and make sure both devices are set to auto in your BIOS. Start 'er up and check. If stiill in PIO, set to DMA if available and reboot again.

You'll need to open your case and visually verify whether or not it's an 80 or 40 wire cable. Since you're running UDMA5 on your primary IDE channel, I'm guessing you've got an 80 wire cable on that channel, but you'll need to check the secondary IDE channel (as that is where you're running into PIO mode). Also note: some devices will not run DMA with another DMA enabled device on the same channel. I have an older DVD-ROM that would only run DMA if it was the only device on an IDE channel....

Hi Osprey4,I tried to use Intel Accelerator but it messed up my PC.Do you mean i have to go to ASUS website, type in my P4P3 info and update my BIOS drivers?I did win xp updates the first 2 months on my new pc in March but nothing happened.Looking at possible problems on the net didn't help me much as DMA seems to be a problem. The retailer's technician at Infonec didn't help much and i think either he didn't enable DMA or doesn't know how to!! I had visited Sony's website and saw their posted PIO4 and UDMA2 values. As you can see, both Secondary IDE master and slave have the same values but only the Slave shows UDMA.Is it a 80 pin cable problem and why is it so?

You must open the case to determine this. But now that I've read your post again, you've got your CD-RW as slave and DVD as master. The CD-RW should be master. As long as you're going to open your case anyway, look at the IDE cables. Your primary is definitely 80-wire (all cables are 40-pin). As long as they look the same, your cable is not the problem. You'll want to follow my suggestions.

My drives occasionally get switched to and stuck in PIO mode. What osprey said in his first post is the only thing that fixes it.
