ADSL + Network Q

So I'm gonna get ADSL for my new house, was on cable before but can't get it at my new place. The company I wanna go with supplies a basic USB modem. We have a basic home network set up, I'm on XP Pro, one housemate is using XP home and the other w98. We're using a 4+1 port switch.

My question is - what do I need to make the broadband connection available to all users? Is ICS actually workable (I've heard bad things said)? The modem would be on my machine in my room...is there any way I can share access without my machine being switched on? Does that mean buying a modem + router in which case which ones are good?

Thanks

You'll probably need a router although I've heard of people being able to share the Internet with just a switch. You could try plugging the switch into the modem and then the comps into the switch and see what happens. What's 4+1 mean?

Does the modem have an Ethernet connection? If not, see if you can get your ISP to give you an Ethernet one instead of a USB one. Then I would recommend going out and purchasing a router/switch. The Linksys one is really good.

I agree, I told them I was using Windows NT 4.0 and therefore couldn't use their USB modem.

btw - 4+1 as in it has an uplink port for a second switch but i have had some success as using it as a fifth port.
