Kids CDROM shows as removable drive

Win 98 shows my CD_R & CD_RW drives as "removable drive" in explorer. If I try to access either I get a disk not formatted error. BIOS and device manager show them correctly as an IDE and Atapi cd-rom.
I can burn a CD with Nero, but can't read a CD in the same drive.
I've removed them from device manager several times, in safe mode and regular, unplugged them, deleted them and plugged 'em back in, tried them one at a time with the same results.
This happened after I reformatted my hard drive, though obviously they worked when I reloaded all my software. The only thing I can think of that changed since then was D/Ling some of Windows "critical updates".
I'm stumped. HELP!!

Mark

Martok, thanks for the advice. Unfortunaly it didn't help. But I got to thinking about that it DID seem to happen after installing some windows updates. So I re-installed Windows this afternoon and bingo! I now have 2 funtioning CD-ROM drives just like I used to!
As to whether it was an update or something else I don't know, but for now I'm smilin'.
