p4 2.5 or Duron 1.8
I saw in the Fry's ad a 1.8 Duron and ECS mobo for 59.99 and a p4 2.5 and ECS mobo for 139.99. Which one is probaly the better deal? I'm looking to upgrade my server.

Well now wait a moment. A game server and web server isn't the same as a big server for office or professional use, and frankly, most of what ECS puts out is NOT high quality product. Moderate quality, at best, is the order of the day.
I'd rather have your Duron 1.8 and a good, solid, high-end AMD mobo that can take an AthlonXP 3200+.

Well the main reason I'm getting on of these is because it's a cheap combo deal. SO including a cheap ECS mobo what's better a 2.5ghx p4 or 1.8ghx duron?

A duron just isnt for a server type setup.....although I admit Im not too familiar with the newer 1.8 durons....I would look at the cache of the duron vs the P4.

You frankly aren't looking at this the right way. An unstable server that doesn't run well because its built on a piece of junk motherboard isn't going to do you any good. I wouldn't buy your combo because I don't generally trust ECS boards. That's not to say all of them suck--I'm sure plenty of people here have seen them work well, and so have I for that matter.
But I wouldn't buy a board to use with one if I had any significant options. In your case, check this out:
AMD Barton 2500+: $85
Shuttle AN35N400 (nForce2): $58.99
Total: $143.99
For a few dollars more you have an upgradeable combo (your P4 can't be past 2.6 GHz more than likely) and a much better board, plus a chip that'll be equally fast.
I realize its not precisely what you are asking, but I wouldn't do what you are asking. *shrug* Opinions are free--take 'em or leave 'em.

Go with the duron 1.8 because its nice and stable, costs less, has the 512kb cache, and can be overclocked (with the right mobo) to faster speeeeds
Not that a game server needs more than 1.0 ghz even for the new games, i got a pent 2, barely any slowdown, runnin a bf1942 20 people server.
like my g/f, it puts out

Hmmm... you're comparing a $60 combo to a $140 combo. That's not exactly a fair comparison. The duron combo should be compared to a celeron combo.
I would get the duron combo. For a game server it will be good enough. You won't notice the performance difference, so why spend the extra $80 for a P4???

Ok, well I didn't get either of them, but while i was at Fry's starting at 430 PM, I got a 9800 for 200 with HL2 and my dad picked up a 60gb MAxtor for 30 bucks. My first experience shopping on Black Friday. Really was all hell breaking loose.
