Call somebody there and have them get it for you...

AFAIK, there is no way for you to get your home IP address from work.

When you do get it, go to your command prompt and type in ping 123.45.678.9 (your IP of course).

You would use PING IP Address at a command prompt.
Depending on your OS, 9X/Me, use "winipcfg" from Run and for NT/2K/XP use "ipconfig" from a command prompt. You will have to do both of these from the machine itself, you can't do it remotely.

Pinging a computer doesn't require any software provided you are running Windows or Linux (not sure about Macs, but I bet they have pings, too). Just open up the command prompt in Windows (Start Menu, Run, and type in "cmd" without the quotes). Then type in "ping <ip address>" where <ip address> is the computer you want to ping.

examples:
ping 10.0.1.1
ping www.yahoo.com

Now, it sounds to me like you have a broadband connection at home, if you're trying to ping your home computer. You have to be online in order to be pinged, and you cannot be behind a firewall or router. On your home computer, go to the command line, and type in "winipcfg" on Windows 95/98/Me or "ipconfig" on Windows NT/2000/XP/2003.

Any questions, just post another message in here.

If you have a static IP address for your home connection, go to http://www.dyndns.org and sign up for their free Static DNS Service. Then just input your IP address in your account setup(you can go to http://www.whatismyip.com to find out what it is.) and from then on, your domain name that you registered with will point to your home IP.

Or, if you have a dynamic IP address with your internet connection(more common), you can use a Dynamic DNS Service for free. What happens when you sign up is that you'll register a domain name such as 'superlac.dyndns.org' or whatever you want, then you can go to a command prompt on your work pc and type in "ping superlac.dyndns.org" and then it will ping your home PC.

Then use one of their IP update clients from their site, and install it on your home computer. That'll keep your domain name updated to point to your latest(current) IP address.

So, in order to find out your home IP address, just go to command prompt and "ping domainnamehere.dyndns.org, and then it will resolve the hostname to an IP and it will show the IP for you, ad well as ping it four times. (In windows...)

HTH,

David

If you run a webserver from your home PC, you can do a nslookup from anywhere to the domain name and it will resolve to an IP.
Like, viz: nslookup domainname.servername.com

If you don't have a web server resolving to your home IP, then Rick is right: need to get the IP first.

Another way is to use remote software like VNC or PCAnywhere to run your home PC fro the office. Of course, you still need to set it up at home first.

Cheers
Mick

I use http://www.dyndns.org which davidamarkley mentioned. Get an account there and install a free client to keep the IP updated.

But you can ping the router which may or may not be helpful depending on what you're trying to accomplish.

Unless it's a good router and blocks your ping. Most, if not all, routers sold for home use have this set by default. :-)
